This post looks at the YouTube video that examines Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan’s chart with primary directions. A corresponding AC chart is calculated.

Rumen Kolev uses the lat and long shown in the Astro.com chart, but not the time zone of -2 hours. He uses a time zone of -1 hour. This demonstrates the bane of all astrologers – time zones.

He demonstrates primary directions from about 38 minutes into the YouTube discussion and notes the mundane aspect of Jupiter conjunct the Desc equates to the rise of Erdogan to prime minister, Dec 2002.

The AC chart had to be adjusted for the time zone of -1, and the lat and long to agree with his chart. Long-press over the Time field to change the time zone. Long-press over lat and long field to change lat and long. Go to Edit Chart to do this.

AC doesn’t calculate charts for Israel 1980, 1984 for DST (Daylight Saving Time) correctly.

In the past, the unpredictability of IDT in Israel became frustrating enough that Microsoft Windows stopped trying to track changes and just made Israeli time be Greenwich Mean Time plus two hours (GMT+2) (and disabled the daylight saving option). This led to various ad hoc solutions to the problem in Windows systems and other Microsoft software (e.g. Outlook calendar entries were often off by an hour when shared, due to the lack of IDT support).

In fact the chart for 2:59 am is in reality 3:59 am because the time of 2:59 is ambiguous and doesn’t really exists because the clocks went forward one hour at 2:00 am to 3:00 am. This is the same approach to the problem that astro.com implements.

Astro Gold is an iOS astrology app. Solar Fire and Solar Fire Gold is an astrology Windows program. These applications save their chart files with the extension SFcht. These files can hold information for one or more charts.

These SFcht files (eg ‘my charts.SFcht’) can be exported from Astro Gold and Solar Fire via email or copied from your Solar Fire Charts folder. The files can then be copied to the AstroConnexions app folder in

Dropbox. Then they can be imported into AC. They can also be imported into AC via the iOS Files app – from AC ver 3.31. Copy the files via the Files app into On MyiPad or iCloud Drive.

SF = Solar Fire or Solar Fire Gold (MS Windows program)

The following screenshots show a method of exporting SFcht file via email using the Solar Fire Windows desktop program. To keep things simple, only one chart is selected for export/import.

The following animated GIF’s show an alternative method.

If a particular chart cannot be imported straight away into AC a procedure that uses forward geocoding retrieves the unresolved details, usually the latitude and longitude of the chart. This allows the chart to be saved to AC. The charts without any problems are automatically saved to the AC database. More details below.

The AstroConnexions folder in your Dropbox is automatically created by the AstroConnexions app so that you can place your exported chart files there. Please note that only you have access to that folder.

The AstroConnexions folder, and the Apps folder is created by AC via the Dropbox api. Do not create these folders yourself.

Note: Currently the import routine cannot handle SFcht files available from the Databank ADB database These SFcht files can be very large and hold thousands of charts which may cause AC to crash with an out of memory error. Therefore you are advised to only use the method outlined here to create SFcht files for export to AC.

1. Select the charts from the SF Chart Database , eg Business SFcht – see animated GIF below
2. Copy to a new SFcht file in the SF Chart Database – see animated GIF below
3. Copy the SFcht file to your Dropbox AstroConnexions folder

The procedure to email Your Chart Files from Astro Gold is not too complicated.

1. email the SFcht to yourself.

2. Open Dropbox app on your iPad if not done so already. Save attached SFcht file (from email app) to Dropbox AstroConnexions folder.

3. Connect to Dropbox if not done in AC. Tap import SFcht charts in AC. See below…

The procedure to copy the SFcht file into you AstroConnexions Dropbox app folder is shown below. I use Spark (email app) on my iPad. Screenshot from standard iOS Mail app shown too. Use the share button/selection in your email to copy the SFcht file to the AstroConnexions Dropbox app folder. The procedure is identical for Solar Fire Sfcht files and Astro Gold SFcht files.

Note that the first time you connect to Dropbox the import table may be blank so you may have to exit the AC Import form and open again to refresh the Import table – your SFcht file will then be displayed.

Notes:

SFcht chart files can hold more than one chart record. AC can handle more than one chart at a time, ie it’s possible to import more than one chart at a time if a SFcht file holds more than one chart record.

SFcht chart files are binary and cannot be examined like a CSV file.

Astro Gold SFcht files – they always state (last time I examined them) the Placidus house system. No Rodden Rating is given. Therefore when importing Astro Gold files Rodden Rating is taken from the Rodden Rating on the AC Import form.

Solar Fire files – have an entry for the House System and Rodden rating.

To use the Rodden Rating and House System on the AC form switch off the ‘Use SFcht file preferences where possible’.

• Lunar Return (natal location)

AC recognises Astro Gold chart files either as

• Horary

Transit, progressed or other charts are ignored if importing them.

Batch Geocoding

Why doesn’t AC process geocoding as a batch? This would make the AC import process much faster. Apple applies a restriction:

The geocoding service which supports CLGeocoder is not meant to batch geocode locations, but is meant to be used as necessary as the device moves, and places and addresses need to be shown to the users. Selectively and sparingly. If you must, the general rule of thumb is to not send more than one geocoding request per minute.

Here’s a video that shows part of the process of importing quick*charts. This is very similar to the process of importing SFcht charts.

Sometimes the Time Zone database used by AC may give an incorrect time zone. Why? Data in the AC time zone database prior to 1950-1960 can sometimes be incorrect or disputed. There are many reasons for this. Please use the web to search information on this.

You may know the actual time zone – local knowledge can trump the database. The database may not have been updated with this particular time zone value. Errors occur. An incorrect time zone may give an incorrect ASC and/or MC. The daylight saving change-over date may be disputed.

Note that most charts from the ‘60’s onwards will be correct as time zones were recorded more accurately during and after this era especially in the Anglosphere and Europe.

How to use:

This procedure will only be necessary on rare occasions – hopefully. In most cases AC calculates the correct time zone for your charts automatically.

Go the Edit Chart screen. Or New Chart.

Ensure that the correct local time has been entered.

Long-press over the Time of Birth field:

Tap the Zone Abbrev. button and tap the required Zone Abbreviation from the resultant table – you may need to scroll quite a bit. For instance, the chart may require a zone abbreviation of CST.

Tap the Hours Mins. button and select the required hours and minutes from the resultant table. Note that it is possible to select a negative hour and minute. For instance, the correct Time Zone might be -06:00:00

Tap the Save button. Inspect the chart to see if the chart is now correct.

One corrected, transits and progressions will use this correct time zone.

Horary charts using the current date and time ie Now are invariably correct.

The best way to check if a chart is correct (if you need to)

Astro.com has the most comprehensive time zone database and using their free on-line chart calculation a good way to ensure that a chart is correct – they specifically allow this. AC’s time zone database is comprehensive and safe to use in most cases but the astro.com database is better.

Note that any time zone database is error prone and there is no guarantee that the resultant chart is correct especially if the chart is using a time and date in wartime or prior to the 1960’s or a country with a difficult history of recording time zone changes. Time zones from the USA, UK, and Europe tend to be more accurate.
