Progressions and Directions – some notes, comparisons and details

AC = AstroConnexions. SA = Solar Arc, RA = Right Ascension, Long = Longitude, MC = Midheaven, Asc = Ascendant. PD = Primary Directions (Placidian semi-arcs).

Solar Fire, Windows astrology software. Astro Gold, iOS astrology software, Morinus.

Secondary Progressions

RA or Long – Naibod

Tropical and sidereal are calculated by AC in the same way Solar Fire, Astro Gold iOS, and astro.com calculate these progressions. Note that astro.com does not calculate sec. prog. in long.

In Solar Fire the option for sec. prog. in RA is “Chart Angle Progression: Naibod in RA”.

MC by Solar arc – this is similar to the setting in astro, com (which is used with sec prog. in RA by AC and astro.com):

MC from Solar Arc.- cropped screenshot from astro.com’s website.

Solar Arc directions

Long

AC calculates the difference between the natal Sun in long and the progressed Sun in long which gives the Solar Arc. This arc is added to the ramc of the natal MC to give the progressed MC in RA. Then the ecliptic longitude of the progressed MC and corresponding Asc is derived.

astro, com gets the same results as AC. Astro gold iOS calculates the Asc differently. It adds the SA arc to the natal Asc. This gives a different Asc directed degree from AC and astro.com

The SA arc is added to the natal planetary positions to get the SA progressed planetary positions. Parts, eg Part of fortune are calculated from the new progressed positions.

Solar Arc declinations

are calculated in a similar manner to astro.com and not like Solar Fire.

All other solar arc calculations/results in longitude are the same for astro.com and Solar Fire:

Directed planetary/points, House Cusps.

RA

AC calculates the difference between the natal Sun in RA and the progressed Sun in RA – Solar Arc. This arc is added to the ramc of the natal MC to give the progressed MC in RA. Then the ecliptic longitude of the progressed MC and corresponding Asc is derived.

Astro.com does not include SA by RA. Note that Astro Gold iOS calculates the Asc and MC differently than AC.

AC adds the Solar Arc in RA to the natal planetary positions to get the SA progressed planetary positions for AC. Astro Gold iOS/Solar Fire does not do this.

Parts, eg Part of fortune, are calculated from the new progressed positions.

Tropical and/or sidereal:

AC recommends using Solar Arc in Long, and Secondary Progressions in RA.

Primary Directions, zodiacal and mundane, direct and converse Placidian semi-arcs. Tropical or Sidereal.

AC has identical results as Morinus (Windows), Valens (Mac). This applies if all parameters are identical, inc geographic lat and long.

See many articles in the AC knowledge base for Primary Directions.
The post Progressions and Directions (available for the iPhone/iPad/Mac) first appeared on AstroConnexions.

CA = Christian Astrology, William Lilly, 1647

Specifically: Secondary Progressions and Solar Arc Directions to the radix – bi-wheels. Including basic strength and debility calculations for the aspect. Note that Lilly’s and Partridge’s aspect reports were originally compiled for Primary Directions. AC has applied/associated these primary directions with AC’s Secondary progressions and Solar Arc directions. I think that this is a valid and useful application of these reports – some may not agree. Some of the reports can be somewhat alarming – please read these 17th century reports in the context they were written and apply 21st century appropriate and sensible interpretations.

For instance, Partridge’s reports for MC Conj, Square or Opposite Mars includes the following

if he is a Highway-man, he is now Hanged for Thieving.

A 21st century translation might be “A possible highly involved entanglement with the law and judiciary.”

What is meant by a report?

A report can be a textual analysis of a particular part of a chart. A report can be a textual analysis/understanding of the whole chart. For AC, reports (text stored in AC’s database) are available for aspects (although not all aspects) to the radix. Specifically Secondary progressions, and Solar Arc bi-wheels. The analysis/reports are taken from copyright-free books and stored in your AC’s database.

Note that most of the text has been updated to correct outdated spellings.

The Moon’s aspects

Generally speaking the Moon’s secondary progressed aspects are considered important but somewhat minor unless the chart has a heavily configured Moon. It may be useful to read the Moon’s aspects by Solar Arc as these are considered, I believe, as powerful as any other aspect.

Report text/analysis taken from:

Christian Astrology, William Lilly, 1647

What planets/points are reported? MC, Asc, Sun and Moon directed to natal Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn.

What aspects are reported? Conjunction, Sextile, Trine, Square and Opposition.

Note that the sextile and trine give the same report. The square and opposition are considered the same for the reports. From the AC Report Settings 45 and 135 degree aspects can be associated with the Square and Opposition reports.

Strength And Debility Analysis by AC

A basic analysis of the radix aspect and the progressed or directed aspect is made by AC using some of the scoring values listed by Schoener’s Table to Examine the Strength & Debility of Each Planet. Once this has been done a graphical display shows the scores. This may allow you to take a more-informed view of the progressed or directed aspect’s meaning/outcome.

For instance, assume the radix has a Sun/Leo/1st house trine to Jupiter/Sagittarius/5th House aspect and the Sun’s progressed aspect is a square to radical Jupiter. The analysis from Lilly etc, may be far too negative for this progressed aspect if we are aware that the radix positions are so favourable. It is hoped that AC’s algorithm will help in providing a more accurate assessment of the progressed or directed aspect by showing a +ve or -ve graphical score, see screenshot below.

To clarify: the graphical display show AC’s analysis of the aspect, a positive score. The textual report is Lilly’s analysis of the aspect which is negaive. Note the difference.

Note that, in this case (Sun/Leo/1st house trine to Jupiter/Sagittarius/5th House aspect), it is useful to see how a Sun trine Jupiter aspect is analysed as this might be more appropriate. To do this inspect the Reports Database.

Dignities and debilities (planets only) apply to both radix positions, plus dignity or debility of applying progressed planet/point. Includes terms and triplicities.
