You must have a Dropbox account. A free account is fine for this purpose.

First use the Import AC Charts button to establish a connection to your Dropbox.

You may see that this:

To ensure a connection to Dropbox

1. Tap the Import AC Charts button – see the screenshot below. Or any AC Import button that allows a connection to Dropbox
2. Tap the Disconnect from Dropbox button, unless already ticked, then
3. Tap the Connect to Dropbox – AC folder button. Connect to Dropbox – see image 3 below
4. Tap the Import AC Charts Done button to remove the Import view or tap outside the view
5. Tap the Import AC Chart button again – Connected!

Exporting and Importing can be done via Drop Box. A free account is fine for this purpose.

From AC ver 3.33 (iPad/Mac) and iPhone ver 1.37 importing/Exporting a AC chart file can be done using the iOS Files app (Dropbox not required). Please see:

Reverse Geocoder – retrieves the location of the town/city/country and other info from the given latitude and longitude. An internet connection is required. You may have to give AC permission, if you haven’t already, to get this information. This is a service provided by Apple. This information is not collected or used by AC.

Importing Quick Charts into AC – progress. You will only see the No. of Charts being counted down if the Quick*Charts file has more than (approx) 50 charts. Less than this and the import is too rapid.

A Time Zone error is a generic name for the many reasons the chart could not be imported into AC.

A time zone error chart has been rejected by AC because it can’t find the town/city/country in its geographical database. This can be for many reasons. The country name may be truncated in the quick chart file. The spelling of the city may be different, etc. For example:

Newcastle-upon-Tyne is different from Newcastle upon Tyne. If the AC geographical database holds the name as Newcastle-upon-Tyne, but the quick chart has it as Newcastle upon Tyne it will be rejected as a Time Zone error. The reverse geocoder will allow your Time Zone chart to be saved to the AC charts database.

Why doesn’t AC process geocoding as a batch, in code? Apple applies a restriction:

The geocoding service which supports CLGeocoder is not meant to batch geocode locations, but is meant to be used as necessary as the device moves, and places and addresses need to be shown to the users. Selectively and sparingly. If you must, the general rule of thumb is to not send more than one geocoding request per minute.

Most desktop astrology applications can export their charts files in the quick*chart format. These files can be imported into AstroConnexions.

A quick chart file can have one or more chart files:

The file with a qck extension should be placed in your apps/AstroConnexions Dropbox folder.

Duplicates = charts already imported and/or charts with the same name

Time Zone Error = charts that don’t have a town/city in the AstroConnexions database. These charts should be created separately and the map search option used.

Success = the number of charts successfully imported.

Import Limitations and Caveats

Not all quick*chart files can be imported into AstroConnexions. This is due to a number of factors:

Spelling mistakes, typos, differences in town/city naming, very obscure villages, corrupted files, etc. Here’s some truncated quick*chart example files eg

Very large quick chart files

Quick chart files are text files so they can be loaded into a text editor and modified.

The process of loading, processing and analysing 10’s of thousands of quick charts can be slow. It may more convenient to divide a large qck chart file into smaller ones, and save to your Dropbox AC folder. One reason for doing this is that there may be many chart records that require using AC’s geocoder.

Why doesn’t AC process geocoding as a batch. Apple applies a restriction:

The geocoding service which supports CLGeocoder is not meant to batch geocode locations, but is meant to be used as necessary as the device moves, and places and addresses need to be shown to the users. Selectively and sparingly. If you must, the general rule of thumb is to not send more than one geocoding request per minute.

Don’t forget to use the extension qck for your files.
