The reassurance of Horary – Cancer scare?

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers but it can be detected early (and late) by a colonoscopy. A possible symptom of colorectal cancer is a change in bowel habit. This is what I had – a severe bout of constipation. I went to the doctors and was given a FIT test pack. Submitted and analysed I was put on a cancer pathway, and an urgent appointment for a colonoscopy was made for me. I was given a laxative preparation for the colonoscopy procedure, Moviprep. Unfortunately this laxative was too brutal for me and I was very ill. I had to cancel the appointment. Soon another appointment was made for a colonoscopy on the 3rd February, 2026 and a different laxative was proscribed. Prior to the colonoscopy the following horary questions were asked by me.

First things first

AstroConnexions is an astrology app for the iPad/Mac. It calculates astrology charts for people wishing to practice or study astrology. It utilises the Swiss ephemeris so the astronomical calculations can be relied upon to be accurate.

The main idea

The main idea behind the design of AC is to make it easy to do those day-to-day things that an amateur or professional astrologer, from a beginner to a seasoned pro would do. If you’ve previously used an astrology desktop program on a Windows platform you’ll find AC is simple yet surprisingly powerful. If you’re new to astrology software please take your time to get to know AC. It’ll be worth it!

******** AstroConnexions is designed to be used in landscape mode. ********

The main concept

Astrologers accept that the natal/radix chart or horary chart is the root of all calculations and that all further calculations (progressions, directions etc) are based on this fundamental concept. The radix is king! AC consistently maintains this throughout all its views. How?

The current natal chart view is never changed by AC whilst it is displayed on the main page. All other charts eg Solar Returns are derived from the natal. So you can be sure that you can always go back to the natal chart knowing that nothing has been altered. Of course the natal chart can be edited but any previously displayed derived chart will be updated by the change in the natal data. Natal charts are the only charts that can edited as all other charts are derived from the natal chart data. This is common practise in Astro software.

So let’s look at how AC takes this idea and utilises it.

Whenever a chart is selected to be viewed the display shown is always set to be Natal:

Quick Year and Month

When a transit or progressed or directed wheel/bi-wheel is selected the Year and Month controls can easily be changed. The outer wheel of the transit/progressed/directed chart will immediately change to the selected date. The single wheel will do the same.

For Returns, this has no effect as solar or lunar returns cannot be progressed or directed, unless they are saved to Your Charts. Return charts can be saved as separate charts like composite and comparison charts. If an unsaved Solar Return is being viewed and the Year is changed the SR for that year is displayed. Similarly for a Lunar Return, except monthly changes can be viewed.

Aspect = Conjunct, Square, Trine, Opposition (major aspects first), then followed by secondary aspects eg sextile

Similarly when any other type of chart is selected the aspects shown will reflect its state, ie either a single-wheel or bi-wheel.

So, for example, if a bi-wheel Secondary Progression is selected (from the left-hand side menu), the aspects calculated would be secondary progressions to the Natal/Radix chart. If a single-wheel Secondary Progression is selected the aspects would be calculated using the current positions of the secondary progressions.

25th August 2016

One of horary astrology’s claims is to be able to locate and find lost objects. Quite a few books have been written exclusively about this subject, and many other horary books have a chapter or so dedicated to this feat.

Naturally to the skeptic, this is blatant rubbish and derisory. Thinking about it, it is hard to believe. So who can blame the person not well versed in horary as to their incredulous outcry when the horary astrologer asserts this is indeed possible.

With this mind I would like to unwrap and lay out some of my thoughts and experience with the practice of locating lost objects using traditional methods of horary astrology.

Before I start I would like to applaud the skyscript[1] website for their analysis of lost object horary charts by their talented forum writers. Their willingness to put their horary methods to the test – which are open to public scrutiny as well as by their peers is extremely helpful to anyone studying the horary art.

Of course one of the best sources of horary examples is the book Christian Astrology, by William Lilly, surely one of the best-known books on horary, and natal astrology. Originally published in 1647, the 1985 facsimile edition heralded a new dawn for horary in my opinion. My teacher, Olivia Barclay had this edition and showed it to me when I visited her many years ago. She was, among others, responsible for the awakening of a renewed interest in horary which is still being felt today.

An excellent primer for lost objects is Deborah Houlding’s article on the Skyscript website entitled “Where is it?”[2]

The horary

I came home early one day from work (I think) and found a message from the postman that stated the parcel I was expecting had been left in my garage which is situated close to my house. I use the garage as a storage place and assumed it was locked. I was confident that I’d locked the garage door. I didn’t know how the postman could have left the parcel in the garage. It was a puzzle. I began to think that I’d misread his card. I went to the garage and tried to open the door – it wouldn’t open, it was locked – just as I’d thought. I re-read the postman’s card and tried again to open the garage door, but to no avail. Time to cast a horary I thought.

Here’s my horary chart, Where’s my Parcel? [3]

Here’s an apposite quote from CA[4], page 321, How the things or goods was lost

If you will know how in what manner they were lost, behold from whom the Lord of the Ascendant did last separate…. If from Mercury by reason of writing, or sending, or dictating of Letters, or going on a Message[5].

In the horary the Moon’s last aspect is a sextile to Mercury – the postman that I just missed that morning? The Moon is also a natural significator for anything lost, but in this horary it’s my significator so that ruling doesn’t really apply here.

What I’m looking for is a connection between the lost parcel and me – Moon and the Sun. The next aspect the Moon makes is to Jupiter. That’s promising. Also, Jupiter is the depositor of the Sun. I think we’re on to something here. Note that Mars and the Sun are in mutual reception with Jupiter.

My lost parcel is signified by the 2nd house ruler, the Sun which is in the 9th house. Now this had me shaking my head. How could the parcel be abroad? But hang on a minute I thought. In the context of the question the garage was the furthest part of the property from the house – at least that’s how I saw it. Not exactly a foreign land (the 9th house rules foreign lands), but the symbolism spoke to me eloquently enough for me to realise that the postman had to be right. I immediately went back to the garage and this time the door opened – it took a bit of coaxing. There was the parcel, and another packet too.

Raphael’s Horary Astrology[6] book states that

If the lord of the 2nd be in a succedent house it is out of the house and in the garden, yard, or out-buildings, not far distant from the house…

CA, page 324 also states that

The Lord of the second in the 10th or 9th, it is in the house of the Querent,…..[7]

I began to see the symbolism of Mars in the same house as the Sun. The parcel I was expecting contained an expensive pair of shoes (signified by Sun in Pisces), by an Italian designer – maybe a reference to the 9th house, if I’m not stretching the analogy too far. The other parcel contained kitchen cleansing material, bought from a charity – signified it seems to me quite accurately by Mars in Pisces.

An argument against recovery is

Both Sun and Moon ‘under the earth‘.[8]

This happens if *Natal* chart is selected and the go forward button is tapped. Natal charts can’t be advanced in time or changed (except when edited).

What AC does is to create a transit chart of the natal chart, using the same date and time so that you can move the chart in time by clicking the *go forward* or *go back* buttons.

Why is this useful?

One scenario would be when analyzing a Horary chart. It is often useful to see what the Moon does. Does it reach the trine to Jupiter and perfect the aspect or does Mercury reach Jupiter first and obstruct the possible Moon-Jupiter trine. Many astrological questions can be answered by manipulating the chart using the *go forward* or *go back* buttons.

Double-tap over the chart, once or twice. That’s it.
